Today marks the 40th anniversary of the Star Wars saga.

When the original Star Wars: A New Hope film first premiered 40 years ago on May 25, 1977 in just a few select theaters, even George Lucas could not have predicted at that time the worldwide phenomenal success of the Star Wars saga. Although not everyone has seen Star Wars, it is hard to find anyone who cannot tell you famous quotes from the movies such as “May the force be with you” or “Luke, I am your father“.

Since then, the original Star Wars film expanded into one of the most valuable film franchises in the world with a devoted global fan base and while generating billions of dollars in ticket sales and branded merchandise.

The seven Star Wars episodes has grossed an estimated $7.3 billion worldwide at the box office. Home entertainment sales including VHS sales, DVD sales, rentals, and digital sales generated an estimated $5.749 billion. Sales of Star Wars branded toys and merchandises amount to an estimated $17 billion. There are about 100 Star Wars video game titles, which bring in an estimated $4.28 billion in sales. Intellectual Property of the Star Wars franchise is valued at an estimated $4 billion. Other Star Wars related sales such as comic books, animated series, licensing fee and resale market of collectibles have an estimated value of $3.65 billion. Add all of these values together and we can see that the entire Star Wars franchise has an estimated net worth of a whopping $41.979 billion!

Updated June 22, 2020:

According to www.statista.com, the movie franchise has grossed $9.31 billion from box office sales alone as of October 2019.

According to Wikipedia, the most current estimates box office revenue at $10.3 billion while home video revenue grossed $9 billion itself. Merchandising was the largest piece of the pie, bringing in $42.2 billion and video games raking in $6 billion. The franchise also has other smaller streams of income.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Star Wars franchise, the Tunisian Star Wars Fan Club filmed a fan video at many of the original Star Wars film locations in Tunisia.
