Desert Oasis in Ksar Ghilane
A desert oasis is where there is a natural source of water, allowing for plants to grow and even people to survive. Ksar Ghilane is just that.
It seems as out of nowhere, date palm groves appear. The town sits just at the edge of the Sahara Desert. There are guesthouses and even luxury tents furnished with air conditioning for guests to enjoy. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes as well.
The source of water for the town is the same natural hot spring that is used to care for the date palms. This spring also fills a swimming hole next to many of the restaurants and cafes. It is also the source of the running water in the guesthouses and surrounding buildings.
Other than swimming in the naturally sourced pool, activities available in Ksar Ghilane include horseback riding, camel trekking, quads (ATVs), dune buggies, etc. Many of these are family-friendly activities and come at affordable prices. Of course, with the natural beauty of the desert and hot spring, you may decide to take it slow and just relax in this desert paradise.
Ksar Ghilane is known for two other things. Firstly, within a few kilometers is a Roman fort named Tisavar. This fort sits atop a hill allowing for watchmen to see far across the desert sands. It was later used by the Berbers and the French military as well. Secondly, Ksar Ghilane was the site of one of World War II’s many battles in Tunisia. There is a standing monument to French General Leclerc not too far from the swimming hole.
For CBS Amazing Race fans, Ksar Ghilane was featured on the show in 2001
